How to fetch your cash and fend off ATM thieves
Access to cash 24/7 is convenient, but ATMs can easily become a source of inconvenience if used to steal our personal information.
Skimming, which happens with ATM thieves steal account numbers and pins using remote devices, is dramatically increasing.
Most people aren’t aware their information is being stolen, as these devices often mimic the card slot. Thieves also use hidden cameras to view your card number and pin as you enter it into the atm.
Here’s how to help prevent your information being stolen.
· When using an ATM, use your hand as a shield while you enter your pin so thieves can’t see it on hidden camera.
· Use ATMs you’re familiar with, and limit how many visits you make. The fewer trips you make to the ATM, the safer you are.
· Check your bank account frequently for any unauthorized withdrawals, and alert your bank if you see suspicious activity.
· Examine an ATM machine before you insert your card. If there are any loose pieces or if anything seems out of order, use a different ATM.
