Have enough funds for Fido?
Ready for a pet? Before you commit, make sure you know the real cost of that doggy in the window.
Nearly two-thirds of U.S. households own a pet. Depending on the health, age, and lifespan of a breed, the price of owning a pet varies.
Dog lovers love to spend money on their furry best friend—it’s hard to say no to that happily wagging tail. Between buying food, visiting the vet, preventing fleas and spoiling with toys, dogs can cost you nearly $900 a year.
Cats are more self-sufficient, that doesn’t mean they cost too much less. In general, cat products normally cost less than dog products would, but the overall cost for a cat can be almost $700 a year.
If you’re on a budget, but still want a pet to love, try a fish. Fish are the most inexpensive pet, costing only $35 a year. While they may not be the best entertainment, no vet visits or expensive toys to buy can save you money.
Regardless of the cost, most of us find our pets to be worth the money spent, but make sure you know the true cost before taking a pet home with you.
