Thrift stores are thriving

Consignment stores are surging in popularity among those who want to cut back on price but not quality.

Thrift store sales totaled $11.7 billion in the first nine months of 2011, a 26.7% increase from the same time period last year.

Adding more fuel to the used-goods fire, rental rates were slashed for upscale retail space that sat vacant in affluent areas. More well-off customers in those areas were then drawn to those stores for both shopping and dropping off merchandise to resell.

Do you go to thrift stores in nicer areas for better goods?
