Which do you feel safer in: A hybrid or a gas car?
According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety’s Highway Loss Data Institute, hybrid cars are safer than vehicles that run on gas.
The odds of being injured in a crash are 25 percent lower on average for people in hybrids vs. the gasoline equivalent. The biggest factor in reduced injury rates is the car’s weight. Hybrids weigh 10 percent more than their gasoline counterparts, giving them an advantage in collisions. Heavier cars have the advantage in single-car crashes, too, because they’re more likely deform what they hit, such as a telephone poll.
It’s possible that the insurance industry will take this data into consideration when rating hybrids, affecting car insurance premiums.
