Frugalistas weigh in: Getting high-style fashion on a budget
If you’ve ever lusted over a store mannequin’s duds only to be deflated by the unattainable price tag, you know what it’s like when your taste exceeds your means.
Recessionary times aside, fashion and image are still important in today’s world, but both can be had on a budget.
Here are some tips on what quality apparel items to spring for and invest in, and where you can scrimp:
· Splurge on basics that never go out of style. For women, it’s a tailored little black dress, and for men, it’s one custom-made suit.
· Men should invest in a good pair of shoes that can be repaired and kept polished and stay away from gum-soled shoes.
· For the flavor of the season or loud prints, go to big-box discount stores such as Target or Forever 21.
· Purse prices can reach the stratosphere. You don’t have to have a Louis Vuitton to make a statement, but women should invest in a handbag that’s not imitation leather, but made of good material.
· A Rolex may not be in everyone’s price range, but people in the business world need a good mid-range watch to complete the look for work.
· Quality bras that fit properly are a must for women.
· Woman can save money on workout gear by shopping the boys’ department of big-box or department stores.
· Don’t be shy about looking at thrift stores, especially in well-to-do areas. You may find a quality treasure that still has its original price tag.
